Guam-based Navy helicopter squadron rescues Chinese mariner — its 16th save this year - Stars and Stripes

Guam-based Navy helicopter squadron rescues Chinese mariner — its 16th save this year

Just two weeks after its last save, Guam-based Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 25 rescued a Chinese mariner suffering a medical emergency at sea on Tuesday, a Navy statement said.

The save was the Island Knights squadron’s 16th this year.

It happened during stormy weather after U.S. Coast Guard Sector Guam alerted the squadron to a “distressed mariner” aboard the Chinese-flagged oil tanker CSC Brave, according to the statement. Within two hours, a squadron search and rescue crew left Andersen Air Force Base aboard an SH-60 Seahawk to rescue the person from the tanker.

Two crewmembers were lowered onto the Chinese vessel to check on the patient and prepare him to be hoisted into the Navy helicopter amid 15-foot waves, Lt. Michael Sipah, the Seahawk’s co-pilot, told Stars and Stripes in an email Thursday.

“The 15-foot sea state, less than ideal weather, as well as the moving ship, required precision work between the crew chief [Petty Officer First Class] Joshua Teague and myself at the controls to maintain the aircraft over the hoisting spot,” Sipah said.

The crew then lifted the mariner into the aircraft hovering above and gave lifesaving medical care, aircraft commander Lt. Cmdr. Philip Pretizinger said in the Navy’s statement.

“Lt. Erik Kumetz and Petty Officer [2nd Class] Kyle Bowen performed a harrowing in-flight blood transfusion, ultimately saving the patient’s life,” he said.

A tropical storm moved through the region Tuesday, and small craft and high surf advisories were in effect, according to U.S. National Weather Service Guam. Wind gusts on Guam reached about 40 mph.

The crew ultimately brought the mariner to Guam Memorial Hospital for more help, according to the statement. Information about where the rescue took place was not immediately available.

It was the 18th time the Coast Guard has called Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 25 to help and the 16th recovery during search and rescue or medical evacuations this year, according to the statement.

By this time last year, the squadron had made 10 survivor recoveries and received 22 emergency calls, according to a July 26 Navy statement.

Since its start in 1984, the squadron has saved 617 people in search and rescue operations and 667 in medical evacuations, Task Force 76 spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Russ Wolfkiel told Stars and Stripes Thursday.

The Navy’s only Seahawk squadron permanently stationed overseas, the unit averages about 30 rescues and 70 medical evacuations per year, according to the squadron’s website. It keeps emergency capabilities ready 24/7 to respond to calls from the Coast Guard and Joint Region Marianas, the organization that manages Andersen and Naval Base Guam.

The squadron also supports more traditional military duties such as drone and torpedo recovery and fleet logistics around Guam, according to its website.

Before Tuesday’s recovery, the squadron’s last rescue took place July 24 after a civilian was hurt sailing three days before in a severe thunderstorm about 100 nautical miles west of Guam, according to a July 25 Navy statement. The man’s condition had deteriorated over the three days, but the crew stabilized him with IV fluid during the flight back to Guam.

“HSC-25’s ability to launch our aircraft on a moment’s notice for a SAR or MEDEVAC is astounding,” HSC-25 commanding officer Cmdr. Frank Loforti said in the Navy statement. “Every Sailor should be proud of the lives we are able to save and the support we provide to Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.”

Untangling the Complicated Timeline That Is Blake Horstmann's Bachelor in Paradise Love Affairs

Oh, what a tangled web Bachelor in Paradise is weaving.

On this season of the hit reality series, contestant Blake Horstmann has found himself in a bit of a sticky situation between fellow stars Caelynn Miller-Keyes and Kristina Schulman. After arriving to the tropical location, it was revealed that Blake had been involved with both Caelynn and Kristina prior to the show, even hooking up with both of them during the same weekend at Stagecoach Festival in April.

On BiP, Caelynn claimed that she and Blake had been "talking" for "a couple months" after being set up by Colton Underwood. On the second night of the music festival, Caelynn and Blake hooked up, but it was later revealed that he hooked up with Kristina on the first night of Stagecoach.

Before filming on BiP began, Caelynn claimed, Blake wanted her to "lie" about their hookup, saying he called their intimate time together a "mistake." During the second episode of the reality show, viewers saw both Kristina and Caelynn confront Blake over the situation.

As the episode was airing, a distraught Blake took to Instagram to defend himself, sharing his side of the story, as well as text messages between him and Caelynn. Before we get into the text messages, let's take a look back at a timeline of events that led to this tangled web.

Blake Meets Kristina-Aug. 2018: On Bachelor in Paradise, Kristina tells Blake she "saw a different" side of him when they met in August. "I was like, this guy is worthy of my attention and what I have to offer," she shares. "We had some fun and then, at times, more than friends."

Colton Sets Caelynn Up With Blake-Prior to Stagecoach: While on BiP, Caelynn says that, at some point before Stagecoach, Colton set her up with Blake. "Blake and I were talking for a couple months...we were like FaceTiming like three times a day, texting every day," Caelynn said. "I really liked him, I was like I actually see something with this guy."

During a chat with BiP's Wells Adams, Caelynn claimed that Blake "ghosted" her. She went on to tell Wells that she saw Blake at the music festival and he "ended up like sweet-talking me and we spent the night together."

According to Caelynn, when she woke up in his bed, Blake was direct messaging her fellow Bachelor contestant Hannah Godwin and "talking about how hot" Tayshia Adams is.

Stagecoach-April 2019: According to Kristina and Caelynn's accounts, Blake hooked up with Kristina on the first night of the festival and Caelynn on the second night.

BiP Filming Begins-June 2019: In June, production for BiP begins. On the episodes that have already aired, Caelynn claimed that she talked to Blake shortly before filming began and he told her to "lie" about their hookup.

BiP Premieres-Aug. 2019: In the premiere episode, details begin to emerge about Blake's Stagecoach weekend. On the second episode, Caelynn told Blake she felt "disrespected" by him and broke down in tears.

Blake Shares Texts From Caelynn-Aug. 2019: As the second episode of BiP was airing, Blake took to Instagram to share his side of the story.

"I NEVER 'sweet talked' her at Stagecoach. Caelynn and I were NEVER in a relationship. I NEVER ghosted Caelynn, I NEVER called her a mistake and I absolutely NEVER EVER EVER silenced Caelynn," Blake said in response to Caelynn's claims.

Blake Shares Texts From Caelynn-Aug. 2019: Blake also shared text exchanges between him and Caelynn from both Stagecoach and from one week before BiP. In their texts from Stagecoach, Blake writes to Caelynn, "We can cuddle but no sex lol." Caelynn went on to tell Blake, "If I come over it's strictly for sex. Nothing more nothing less."

In their conversation before BiP, Caelynn and Blake discussed being "honest" about their past. You can see both exchanges above!

Caelynn has yet to publicly respond to Blake sharing (and then deleting) their text messages.

As for this year's festivities, the 29-year-old ties Ariana Grande for the title of most-nominated artist. To name just a few, Swift's singles "Me!" and "You Need to Calm Down" are nominated for Video of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Video.

Over the years, Swift has taken home an impressive seven VMAs overall, including one Video of the Year accolade and three Best Female Video awards.

In other VMAs updates, MTV announced last week that Marc Jacobs will receive the first-ever Fashion Trailblazer Award

HMS Forth scrambled to shadow Russian ship through Channel - Sky News

A Royal Navy patrol ship has been scrambled to escort a Russian ship through the English Channel.

Portsmouth-based HMS Forth had just returned to UK waters from her first foreign port visit when it was scrambled to monitor the Russian patrol ship Vasily Bykov.

A Navy spokesman said: "Forth had departed Gibraltar on July 31, before heading north at speed and conducting heavy weather trials before a quick logistics stop in Devonport.

"She then sailed and positioned herself ready to meet the Vasily Bykov as the vessel sailed from the North Sea having taken part in Russia's Navy Days celebration in St Petersburg."

HMS Forth's executive officer Lieutenant Samuel Fields said: "It has been a particularly busy time for HMS Forth as we generate for deployed operations and continue to test our ship's capabilities.

"I am proud of the ship's company for rising to this additional challenge."

The Vasily Bykov was shadowed by HMS Forth through the UK's area of interest last month.

Bachelor in Paradise's Jade Roper Shares Empowering Selfie 1 Week After Giving Birth

Jade Roper

Instagram

Jade Roper Tolbert is loving the skin she's in.

Just one week after giving birth, the Bachelor in Paradise alum took to Instagram to share an empowering message.

"Women's bodies are seriously phenomenal!" she wrote alongside a photo of herself cradling her newborn and posing in her bra and underwear. "It's taking my uterus more time to return to its normal state this time around, but honestly I have never loved my body more than I have this postpartum."

She also opened up about how her body is healing after the birth.

"A lot of you have asked about my recovery, and I received several stitches and am slowly healing physically— the mental and emotional healing is hard to put a finger on, but I am giving myself grace to process everything," she continued. "But after such an overwhelming labor and delivery, I have so much respect for my body and the journey it's been on this year to grow and bring this perfect little joy into my life. So in love, so thankful. #oneweekpostpartum #4thtrimester."

The reality star and her husband Tanner Tolbert welcomed their son, Brooks Easton Tolbert, on July 29. However, the birth didn't go according to plan. In fact, the delivery took place inside of their master closet.

"It was one of the scariest moments of my life because I felt so out of control," she wrote on Instagram, noting that their little man arrived 75 minutes after her water broke, "but Tanner, Tanner's mom, my mom and the medics and firefighters kept me going when I felt like the world was caving in on me and my unborn baby."

Thankfully, it looks like the whole family is doing well. The TV stars even shared an adorable video of their daughter, Emerson, meeting her baby brother.

Congratulations once again to the family of four!
